Job title
Robotics Intern
Job location
San Francisco
Job description

The Role
This is a hands-on internship for an engineering student who wants their work to ship on real robots headed to real customers, not a class project that ends at the demo. The engineering work at OpenMind centers on a variety of tasks across robotics and software: integrating new robot platforms into our stack and expanding what that stack can do. You will work directly alongside our robotics and deployment engineers, and interns at OpenMind are treated as engineers: you will own tasks end to end, your work will ship, and you will see it running in the field.

The scope is deliberately broad. Depending on your interests and strengths, you might work on data collection infrastructure, internal tools and UI, reinforcement learning experiments, SLAM and navigation, or the integration and testing that brings a new robot platform online.

What You Will Do

  • Integrate new robot platforms into our software stack: SDK integration, sensor configuration, calibration, and validation

  • Build and extend data collection infrastructure and pipelines for our robot fleet

  • Develop internal tools and UI for monitoring, teleoperation, and debugging robots

  • Contribute to autonomy work such as SLAM, navigation, and reinforcement learning experiments alongside our engineers

  • Run structured tests on integrated systems, and document results the team can make decisions from

  • Write scripts and tooling in Python to automate testing, data collection, and analysis

What We Look For

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in computer science, robotics, mechatronics, electrical engineering, or a related field

  • Strong software fundamentals in Python and comfort in Linux

  • Some hands-on hardware background: robotics competitions, personal projects, research labs, or prior internships where you touched real hardware

  • Interest in one or more of: data collection infrastructure, developer tools and UI, reinforcement learning, SLAM and navigation

  • A bias toward doing: you would rather run the experiment and find the problem than speculate about it

  • Careful, methodical habits: you document what you build and measure what you change

Nice to Have

  • Experience with ROS2, robot SDKs, or embedded systems

  • Experience building web UIs, data dashboards, or backend services

  • Coursework or projects in control systems, computer vision, or machine learning
